Mary Florence (“Flo”) Sigmond died suddenly on January 13, 2021.
Flo was born in Allegheny County, PA during the so called Spanish Flu Pandemic. As a bright young woman, she was granted a scholarship to Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) where she graduated in 1939. Flo was originally accepted as WAVE in WWII, but was eventually excluded due to her near sightedness.
She became one of the most effective recruiters for the Navy Ship Yards in Long Island and beyond. After WWII, Flo joined the Veterans Administration. While there, she met and married Irwin Sigmond.
She was widowed in March 1966. In 1961, Flo was awarded an M ED by the University of Virginia. She became a respected leader in Special Education in the State of Virginia. She served on the Chapter 10 Board for Arlington County, and as supervisor for special education for Arlington County after teaching in both Arlington and Falls Church, VA. Flo retired from Arlington County in 1987.
She continued working in the education field writing grant applications for not-for-profits. She fully retired in 2005 when she relocated to New York City. Flo enjoyed the City, reveling in the public transit system, theater, concerts and dance.
Flo is survived by her daughter Carol of NYC and her beloved nieces and nephews.
Donations in Flo’s memory may be made to United cerebral palsy of New York.
